Travel Outside of Lisbon
Sintra
Just 30–40 minutes from Lisbon by car or train, Sintra is a town tucked into the hills—famous for its colorful palaces, lush gardens, and misty forests. Highlights include the iconic Pena Palace, Quinta da Regaleira, and the hilltop Moorish Castle. It’s the perfect place to spend a day wandering and castle-hopping.
Algarve
Located about 2.5 hours south of Lisbon, the Algarve is a stunning coastal region known for its golden cliffs, hidden beaches, and picturesque towns. It’s a beautiful drive, and we recommend renting a car to explore at your own pace. Popular activities include kayaking to the famous Benagil caves and wine tasting at one of the region’s many scenic wineries—perfect for a post-wedding adventure.
Consider stopping in the picturesque town of Alte on your way down to have lunch at Terra d' Alte and explore the waterfall in town!
Porto
While we haven’t yet had the chance to visit Porto ourselves, it’s high on our list—and for good reason! Portugal’s second-largest city is known for its colorful riverside buildings, steep cobbled streets, and world-famous port wine. From historic architecture to scenic boat rides along the Douro River, it’s a beautiful blend of old-world charm and vibrant culture. Porto is about a 3-hour drive north of Lisbon, making it a great option for those looking to explore more of the country.
Logistics
We recommend downloading Bolt, which is similar to Uber but more readily accessible in Lisbon. Once within Chiado/Baixa area, most things are easily walkable.
Areas of Lisbon
Alfama
Lisbon’s oldest and most charming neighborhood. Known for its winding alleys, scenic viewpoints (miradouros), and traditional Fado music. Great for wandering and soaking up history.
Baixa & Chiado
The bustling heart of the city. Baixa is full of grand plazas, shops, and cafés, while Chiado offers a slightly more elegant, artsy vibe with bookstores, boutiques, and beautiful tile façades.
Bairro Alto
A hilltop neighborhood that comes alive at night. Expect tiny bars, live music, and a fun, youthful energy. By day, it’s quiet and quaint—perfect for a stroll.
Príncipe Real
Trendy and residential with leafy streets, stylish shops, and cozy cafés. Great for a relaxed afternoon or brunch. Also home to a lovely weekend market.
Belém
A bit west of the center and full of monuments, museums, and the iconic Pastéis de Belém. Ideal for a half-day visit to explore Lisbon’s maritime history and enjoy riverside walks.
Cais do Sodré
Great restaurants, bars, and access to the Time Out Market. Also a major transport hub if you’re heading to the beach or Cascais.
LX Factory
A converted industrial complex now home to cafés, restaurants, indie shops, and street art. A fun, modern contrast to Lisbon’s older quarters.
